History of the Nilgai in Texas

Also known as “the Blue Bull”, Nilgai originated in India, Pakistan, and Nepal. They have made Mellon Creek Ranch their home for over 70 years after being brought over to Texas in the 1930s and migrating to Mellon Creek Ranch from the King Ranch. Our ranch’s diverse terrain—stretching from bay front and prairieland to saltgrass flats, crop fields, and thick brush—provides ideal habitat for Nilgai to thrive.

Guided Nilgai Hunts in South Texas

Hunt Details

Nilgai bull hunts are primarily done from October through the end of March and into mid-April. Our 4-day nilgai hunts take place on our low-fence, free-range property in South Texas. Your hunt begins the evening you arrive, followed by two full days of guided hunting and a final morning hunt, concluding at noon on your departure day.

After a successful hunt, our guides will field dress, skin, quarter, and cape your Nilgai. We also include transportation of your cape and horns to our recommended taxidermist. If you prefer to have your trophy shipped directly to you or your own taxidermist, we can arrange shipping for an additional fee. A recommended local meat processor is also available if you choose to have your harvest processed locally.

Hunting Methods

Our free-range Nilgai hunts are mostly safari style, spot-and-stalk hunts with shots made with shooting sticks, or prone. We typically hunt the first 2-4 hours and last 2-4 hours of daylight, depending on the time of year.
