What You Need to Know About Duck Hunting in South Texas
Excellent Waterfowl Habitat & Populations
The Gulf Coast of Texas is said to have some of the best waterfowl hunting in North America, with migratory ducks being drawn to the local freshwater marshes, coastal prairies, and tidal flats. Mellon Creek Outfitters is located on the outskirts of Refugio, Texas, just northeast of Corpus Christi. The ranch terrain varies from bay front and prairieland to salt grass and crop fields with 13 freshwater ponds scattered across the main ranch, creating ideal duck hunting habitat.
Texas Duck Hunting Season
Texas duck hunting season runs from early November through late January, with a two-week gap typically happening from shortly after Thanksgiving until mid-December. Temperatures can vary throughout the season, so keep an eye on the weather before your hunt and pack accordingly.

Guided Duck Hunts in South Texas
Hunt Details
Our guided waterfowl hunts vary from 1 to 5 days, and we require a minimum of 4 hunters to book a hunt. Most hunts are typically done in the early morning utilizing A-frames, layouts, and brush blinds. All hunts are led by our expert duck hunting guides with professionally trained retrievers by their side. After the hunt, the guides will dress your birds, and shipping to our recommended taxidermist is included. We will ship the bird to you or your taxidermist for an additional fee.
Duck Species in South Texas
At Mellon Creek Outfitters, we focus on hunting ducks with the occasional snow goose shot over the course of the season. Some of the primary ducks we harvest are pintails, redheads, spoonbills, blue-winged and green-winged teal, widgeon, mottled duck, buffleheads, and some goldeneye and mallards.
